Super Guarantee Hits Historic 12% Milestone

With the conclusion of the Super Guarantee journey and the introduction of improved retirement savings opportunities, the 2025-2026 fiscal year marks a number of positive changes to Australia’s superannuation landscape.

Historic Milestone: Super Guarantee Reaches 12%

The Super Guarantee rate has finally arrived at 12% of regular time earnings as of 1 July 2025. This ensures that Australian workers now receive the maximum legally mandated employer contribution to their retirement savings, marking the conclusion of a gradual increase program that started at 4% more than thirty years ago.

Contribution Caps Remain Stable

Concessional (Before-tax) Contributions

The $30,000 annual cap stays the same. This gives you certainty for salary sacrifice and employer contribution planning.

Non-concessional (After-tax) Contributions

The $120,000 annual cap remains at current levels. Eligible members under 75 can access bring-forward provisions.

Maximum Contribution Base

The maximum earnings base for Super Guarantee calculations is $62,500 per quarter.

Enhanced Opportunities for Growth

Catch-Up Concessional Provisions

Members with total superannuation balances below $500,000 on 30 June can continue to utilise unused concessional contribution cap amounts from previous years. This flexibility allows you to maximise your super contributions when your financial circumstances improve.

Bring-Forward Arrangements

Eligible members under 75 with total superannuation balances below $2 million can access up to three years’ worth of non-concessional contributions in one year. This allows for significant wealth transfers into the superannuation system.

Important Considerations

Members with total superannuation balances exceeding $2 million on 30 June 2025 cannot make non-concessional contributions without incurring additional tax. Regular monitoring of your balance is essential for strategic planning.

Strategic Planning Opportunities

The stability in contribution caps combined with the historic 12% Super Guarantee rate creates an excellent environment for strategic retirement planning.

Consider reviewing your contribution strategy to:

  • Maximise the benefit of increased employer contributions
  • Utilise carry-forward provisions if eligible
  • Plan significant after-tax contributions using bring-forward rules
  • Ensure your superannuation strategy aligns with your retirement goals
